First Home Basics: Choosing A Floor Plan

Choosing a Floor Plan

Sorting through the scores of floor plans and designs offered by each builder can be time-consuming and tiresome.

A builder may offer a dozen or more plans for each of its communities. If you are considering three or four different builders, your table could be littered with 50 plans by the end of the day.

But finding the plan that’s right for your family doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, there are a few rules you can follow that will separate the good plans from the bad, and the great ones from the good.

Go with the flow.
A good floor plan allows for flow from room to room, with long unobstructed sight lines.

Let in the light.
A good design maximizes natural light with large windows thoughtfully placed throughout the home.

Get in sync.
Your home should reflect the way you live. Do you need a home office? Do you need a large media room to accommodate a wide-screen television? Do you want the kid’s room next to yours, or a little separation?

Seek storage.
Can the plan’s closets accommodate your massive shoe collection? Will your power tools have a place to reside?
